1st Step: Secure a mentor.

Obstacles: I interviewed multiple Police Chiefs throughout my paper. All three were very nice and pleasant. The hard part was when I had to decide who was going to be my mentor.

Successes: I chose Chief of Police of Smithfield Micheal Scott. He was a wonderful mentor and taught me a lot.

2nd Step: Agree on a product

Obstacles: We did not know where to begin. Safe driving is a hot topic and has been used numerous times for Senior Projects, not only did I want to do something different but so did the Chief.

Successes: We agreed on organizing a Walk for Awareness. This walks propose was so raise awareness of the deaths in our county and the growing number. Also, the Walk for Awareness was to bring the community together.

3rd Step: Secure a location for the Walk for Awareness

Obstacles: I did not know where to look and I was nervous to ask for a venue

Successes: I met with Tim Johnson at the Recreation Center and secured a shelter.

4th Step: Secure a date for the event

Obtacles: There were many other events going on in October and many of the shelters were already reserved. Tim Johnson helped me pick one of the shelters and a time for the Walk for Awareness.

5th Step: Make flyers

Obstacles: I had to get help from my sister in Honduras to make 2 different flyers one for Fall Fest at school and another one to be the general flyer.

Successes: My sister was very patient and so was I and we were able to work together to make great flyers.

6th Step: Distribute Flyers

Obtacles: I had over 1000 flyers to distribute including the ones at Fall Fest

Successes: I gave all my flyers out and was able to see a positive response

7th Step: Find sponsors for the Walk for Awareness

Obtacles: I needed t-shirts, a banner (in the picture), road signs, and gifts for the raffle

Successes: In the end I had over 20 sponsors and alomost everyone won something during the drawing. Sake Kids, Quickshirts, and the Smithfield PD helped out so much and I am so grateful.

8th Step: Ensure that all my helpers and major sponsers have a t-shirt and are able to attentd.

Obstacles: Quickshirts was only able to make a certain amount of t-shirts for free. I had to decrease the amount of my order

Successes: Some of my sponsors went to the event and had a t-shirt ready for them, thanks to Quickshirts in my hometown of Princeton.

9th Step: Assure myself that everyone at the Walk for Awareness had a ticket for the drawing also, that way I could count how many people attended

Obtacles: I was not sure if to count little kids that attended with thier parents

Successes: Everyone above the age of 5 got a ticket and was able to participate in the drawing.

10th Step: Giving a speech

Obtacles: I had to overcome my nerves and anxiety and give a short speech about why I chose to do a walk, and how it all started.

Successes: Everyone listened to me patiently and I was able to overcome my fear of speaking in front of a group of people

11th Step: Execute a peaceful drawing for prizes

Obstacles:  Cheif Scott and I had not agreed on how to do the drawing before hand

Successes: many people were able to win prizes from various SPonsors and the drawing went smoothly after Chief Scott and I got a rhythm of it.

12th Step: Execute the Walk for Awareness

Obstacles: I was afraid the Walk for Awareness would not have a good turn out

Successes: In the end the Walk for Awareness was a great event and I'm so happy that everything went smoothly.

My mentor was Chief Michael Scott. He is the Chief of Police in Smithfield, NC. He was very helpful and I learned a lot from him. He helped me organize the event, and helped me to get to know people of the community more. I am so glad that I chose him as my mentor.
